Sembalun is the undisputed trekking capital of Lombok. While most people know it solely as the gateway to Mount Rinjani, the valley itself is surrounded by stunning hills (bukit) that offer incredible hikes of their own. Whether you are looking for an easy sunset walk, an acclimatization hike before a major climb, or a challenging ridge walk, Sembalun has a trail for you.
Before we break down each destination, use this interactive tool to compare the trails by difficulty and elevation gain to find the right fit for your fitness level:
The Sembalun trekking route is the main and most popular trail for reaching the summit of Mount Rinjani. Starting at an elevation of 1,156 meters, this route takes you through open savannas and rolling hills before a steep climb to the crater rim. It is favored by summit-chasers because the ascent starts higher and is more gradual than the alternative Senaru route.
Elevation: 3,726 m (Summit)
Difficulty: Extreme (Requires high stamina and preparation)
Duration: 2 to 4 days
Best For: Serious trekkers aiming for Indonesia’s second-highest volcano.
If you only have time for one day-hike in Sembalun, make it Pergasingan Hill. It is the village’s most iconic trek, offering what many consider the best view in Lombok: the precise, geometric patchwork of Sembalun’s agricultural fields with Mount Rinjani towering directly across the valley. The hike is a steady, steep climb (averaging a 60-degree incline in parts), but the views from the summit make every step worth it.
Elevation: ~1,700 – 1,800 m
Difficulty: Moderate
Duration: 1.5 to 3 hours up
Best For: Sunrise views, camping, and Rinjani acclimatization.
Taller than Pergasingan, Anak Dara offers a longer and slightly more challenging trek. The trail features a gorgeous ridge walk with steeper climbs near the summit. Because it is less crowded than Pergasingan, it is a favorite among local hikers and those looking for a peaceful, challenging outdoor adventure. The sunset views from the ridge are spectacular.
Elevation: 1,923 m
Difficulty: Hard (Steep and exposed)
Duration: 4 to 5 hours up
Best For: Experienced trekkers wanting a ridge walk.
At 2,300 meters, Nanggi is the highest of the hills surrounding Sembalun. While the first half of the hike is relatively gentle, the final kilometer is punishing, reaching an 85-degree incline in some sections. Because of its difficulty, it is highly recommended to hire a local guide. The summit often places you above the clouds.
Elevation: 2,300 m
Difficulty: Very Hard
Duration: 5 to 6 hours up
Best For: Thrill-seekers and advanced hikers looking for the ultimate local challenge.
If you want the iconic Sembalun valley view without the sweat and exhaustion, Bukit Selong is the answer. It is less of a hike and more of a short, 10-minute walk up a set of earthen stairs through a bamboo grove. At the top, wooden viewing platforms offer incredible vantage points of the patchwork fields below. It is extremely popular for both sunrise and sunset photography.
Elevation: ~1,200 m (Sembalun village is already at ~1,156m, so the actual climb is minimal)
Difficulty: Very Easy (Suitable for all ages)
Duration: 5 to 10 minutes from the parking area
Best For: Families, casual tourists, and photographers.
